This book documents the lives and times of a pioneer Southern family as they expanded from Virginia to South Carolina and Georgia, then to the Mississippi Territory, finally settling in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.
Six biographical chapters narrate the events in the lives of the first three Creagh generations, 1755-1872, with unanswered questions at the end of each chapter for future historians. There is a chapter on the Creaghs in the Civil War, 1860-1865, and a final chapter about the 3rd and 4th generations after the war. An Addendum contains family groups for the 4th and 5th generations, notes about earlier Creaghs in Ireland, and background resources.
Arriving in America from Ireland as a young man, John Creagh fought with Colonel George Washington in the Virginia Regiment during the French and Indian War. After serving again in the Revolutionary War, John married Keziah Bevin in Virginia, and together they established the Creagh family line that continues today.
